Abel Pereira was appointed principal horn of the National Symphony Orchestra in 2014 by Music Director Christoph Eschenbach. He previously served as guest principal horn with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Porto Symphony, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, London Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic. He has performed in the world’s most renowned halls with leading conductors and soloists.
Abel was born in Porto, Portugal, earned advanced degrees in music from Porto University, and continued his studies in Germany with Marie-Luise Neunecker. He was awarded prizes at the Leeuwarden International Horn Competition (Netherlands), Internationaler Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen (Germany), Concertino Praga (Czech Republic), PJM-RDP (Portugal), and the European Master-Prize. His discography includes the complete Mozart Horn Concerti, the urtext Mozart 4th Concerto, Romantic Repertoire for Horn and Piano, Richard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, and the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante.
Abel is a sought-after teacher and performer at international music festivals and taught previously at universities in Porto and Lisbon. He served as a brass coach for the DC Youth Orchestra Program and the Maryland Youth Orchestra. In addition to his career as a horn player, he is also Music Director of the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra and the NSO Summer Music Institute Orchestra. In his spare time, Abel loves boating and cooking.
