Bartok’s driving zeal and Pärt’s sea of calm set the stage for one of the defining works of twentieth-century chamber music. Composed while Messiaen was a German prisoner-of-war from 1940-42, his quartet is visionary in both its compositional style and its merging of the earthly with the spiritual.

PRE-CONCERT FILM SCREENING (6:30-7:00pm at St. Mark’s, Parish Hall): Come hear more about Messiaen's monumental work in a pre-concert film screening, featuring a 30-minute documentary by local filmmaker H. Paul Moon. The film introduces the piece from the perspective of the musicians—the same four guest musicians who will be performing the piece at the concert—and provides some background on the harrowing circumstances surrounding the work's creation.
