Welcome to Chiarina’s 11th season, Roots and Resonances!
We invite you to join us for seven dynamic and diverse live performances between September and May. Whether you’re brand new to Chiarina or a longtime audience member, we are eager to share our exciting new collaborations, distinctive mix of programming, and the “sheer beauty and joy,” in the words of a concertgoer, of hearing chamber music up close.
Each of our seven concerts will celebrate the power of music to bring us together, all from the vantage point of our welcoming neighborhood venue, St. Mark’s Capitol Hill. This season we also highlight our identity as a DC organization by featuring a compelling slate of composers and works linked to our city.
Experience the engaging artistic voices of today, treasured cornerstones of the chamber music literature, and partnerships both longstanding and new. Highlights of the season include:
- The Chiarina debut of the Grammy Award-winning Catalyst Quartet
- Large-scale chamber music works: Aaron Copland’s beloved Appalachian Spring for 13 players and Mendelssohn’s joyful octet
- A lively album launch concert surrounding Chiarina’s debut album The Best Cuisine
- The return of popular guest artists, including clarinetist Ricardo Morales, baritone Carl DuPont, soprano Laura Strickling, pianist Steven Beck, and violinists Njioma Grevious and Domenic Salerni
- Hallmarks of the chamber music repertoire by Brahms, Prokofiev, Mendelssohn, and more
- A commission and world premiere by composer Jeffrey Mumford
- A thematic program journeying through oppression, remembrance, resilience, and hope — including a song cycle on women’s poems from Afghanistan
- Works by ten living composers
- Our third annual family concert featuring music from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
- A celebration of our DC roots that deservedly puts a spotlight on music by DC composers George Walker, Mary Howe, and Clarence Cameron White, and more
As always, concert commentary and post-concert conversations will extend the listening experience. We look forward to seeing you soon!
